Blackwood, New Jersey – April 8, 2008 -- Metrologic Instruments recently held their first Healthcare Educational Forum in conjunction with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC). This event took place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on March 25–26, 2008. More than 45 representatives from hospitals, integrated delivery networks and healthcare information systems across the United States participated in the forum.

The partnership between Metrologic and Wake Forest began in 2006 when Metrologic developed a bar code scanning solution for WFUBMC. WFUBMC currently has approximately 825 MS1633 FocusBT® scanners installed throughout the hospital, including in the pharmacy. Wireless FocusBT scanners were installed in patient rooms to assist healthcare professionals with bedside medication verification by scanning the 1D and 2D bar codes found on medications and patient wristbands. “The resulting partnership has led to marked improvements in the execution of the five rights patient safety initiative, as well as productivity in the pharmacy at Wake Forest,” commented David Breeze, Technology Systems Coordinator. “The idea of jointly hosting an educational event occurred naturally as a result of our close affiliation,” remarked Peter Witonsky, Metrologic’s Director of Business Development.

The two-day forum afforded attendees the opportunity to learn about bar code scanning, bedside and pharmacy workflow, pharmaceutical parsing requirements, communication protocols and recommendations for pre-implementation and ongoing training. Diana Contino, Senior Manager of Global Healthcare at Bearing Point, a leading management and technology consulting company, led an informative session on patient flow. Attendees also participated in a guided tour of the WFUBMC. Most notably, the forum featured a question and answer session with a panel of individuals that were personally involved in the implementation of bar code scanners at Wake Forest. During this session, the President of EnovateIT, Ron Sgro, shared his knowledge regarding mobile computerized systems integration.
